How to Use AI to Prepare for Your Next Career Move
Before you rewrite your CV, use AI to work out what the role actually requires, where your experience already fits and what to do about the gaps over the next 90 days.

AI is becoming part of everyday work.
Businesses are using it to answer customers, analyse information, automate repetitive tasks and reduce admin. But there is another useful application that gets less attention:
using AI to make better career decisions.
Before applying for your next role, AI can help you understand what the job requires, where your experience already fits and what you may need to work on.
Start with the role, not your CV
Most people start a job search by updating their CV.
A better first step is understanding the role you want.
Ask:
- What skills does the role require?
- What experience would an employer expect?
- What evidence would make someone a strong candidate?
- Which requirements are essential and which can be developed?
If you have a job description, AI can help break it into the major skills and experience areas.
If you only know the job title, you can compare several similar roles to understand common expectations.
The goal is not to ask AI:
“Can you make my CV better?”
Start with:
“What would I need to demonstrate to be a strong candidate for this role?”
Compare the requirements with your experience
Next, compare each major requirement with evidence from your own work.
A simple structure works well:
| Role requirement | Your evidence | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Stakeholder management | Led work involving three business teams | Strong |
| People leadership | Supervised two staff | Strengthen examples |
| Executive presentations | Limited evidence | Development area |
| Budget management | Experience exists but not clear on CV | Improve CV |
This helps separate two very different problems.
A real experience gap
You have not yet done something the role expects.
That may require development in your current job.
An evidence gap
You have the experience, but your CV does not show it properly.
That may only require better examples and clearer wording.
Knowing the difference can save you a lot of unnecessary CV rewriting.
Use AI to find better evidence
AI can also help you challenge your own examples.
Instead of asking it to make a statement sound more impressive, ask:
“What evidence would demonstrate this skill to a hiring manager?”
For stakeholder management, for example, useful evidence might include:
- resolving disagreement between teams;
- influencing people without direct authority;
- leading a cross-functional project;
- presenting recommendations;
- managing difficult stakeholders.
You can then look through your own experience for examples that genuinely demonstrate those behaviours.
The evidence still needs to be real. AI should help you find and structure your story, not invent one.
Turn gaps into a 90-day plan
Career planning becomes much more useful when you turn identified gaps into actions.
If your target role requires stronger leadership experience, you might volunteer to lead a small project.
If executive communication is a weaker area, look for an opportunity to present a recommendation or project update.
If the role expects commercial experience, find ways to become involved in budgeting, forecasting or business decisions.
Instead of simply learning that you have a gap, you now know what to do about it.
Using a structured AI career assessment
You can do much of this manually with a general AI assistant, but specialist tools can make the process easier.
Divveyo is an Australian career platform designed around this type of role-readiness assessment.
Rather than simply scoring a CV, it looks at the role you want, the evidence you already have and the areas that may need attention.
You can see how the Divveyo career assessment works before starting.
If you already have a particular job or career move in mind, you can also use the Divveyo role assessment to get a clearer view of your strengths, possible evidence gaps and practical next steps.
Five questions to ask before your next application
Before applying, try to answer:
- What are the most important requirements for this role?
- What evidence do I have for each one?
- Which gaps are real experience gaps?
- Which gaps simply need better evidence on my CV?
- What can I do over the next 90 days to become a stronger candidate?
AI cannot decide your career for you.
But used properly, it can help you make the decision with much better information.
And that is far more useful than simply asking it to rewrite your CV.
